Gut Bloat In Dogs — What It Is, Why It Happens and How To Prevent It

"Gut bloat is when your dog's stomach fills with gas and actually twists — and it causes the intestines to become entangled and twisted up. It requires immediate surgery to correct it.
It's more common in larger deep-chested dogs but it can occur in any type of dog.
The primary reason for gut bloat — there are lots of different reasons that can contribute to it — but the most common one that vets see is when people feed their dog too close to playtime. So their dog immediately comes in the door from playing and chows down a big meal. Or your dog chows down a big meal and immediately goes out for their exercise or play or whatever.
You need to allow a significant amount of time. By significant — an absolute minimum of an hour.
What I personally do with Jujube is that if we're going to walk and then come home and I'm going to feed her, I allow at least an hour. If I'm going to feed her and then go out and walk — like right now it's the middle of summertime — so I tend to feed her around 6 o'clock and we go out around 8:30. You want to allow at least an hour and a half to two hours to ensure that the digestion process has occurred. Your dog's stomach is not going to fill full of gas and potentially twist, requiring immediate life-saving surgery."
